I didn’t grow up listening to her music, and I don’t know much about Dolly Parton. But here are two things I do know: Dolly was loved by America, and her passing hit Frannie Staley, Decode Econ RA, especially hard.

Dollywood, built in 1986, is a tourist attraction that generates $180 to $580 million in annual revenue. Dolly Parton owns 50% of the attraction.
Dollywood transformed Sevier County, creating 23,000 jobs and generating $1.8 billion in annual economic activity.
She made 49 solo studio albums; her first was “Hello, I’m Dolly”.
Whitney Houston’s remake of Dolly’s 1973 recording of “I Will Always Love You” earned Dolly $10 million in royalties in the 1990s. Link
Beyond music, she also published several bestselling books. These include memoirs “Dolly: My Life and Other Unfinished Business,” “Behind the Seams: My Life in Rhinestones,” and “Star of the Show: My Life on Stage,” as well as the novel “Run Rose Run,” co-written with James Patterson. She also wrote several children’s books, including “I Am a Rainbow,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and the “Billy the Kid” series.
The song and movie 9 to 5 were inspired by an organization with a mission of supporting women in the workplace called 9to5. The song was part of the movie soundtrack. The movie hit No. 2 at the box office in 1980. Link
What I know Dolly most for is her philanthropy and her advocacy for the marginalized and unseen. The Dollywood Foundation initially sought to lower the high school dropout rate in her home county in TN. Then the Buddy Program was developed to provide seventh and eighth graders with financial incentives to graduate from high school. The Imagination Library has gifted more than 300 million books to children around the world.
The Power of Giving and Knowing Yourself
Dolly believed in investing in people and making the world a better place. She was happy to share her wealth to support her community. She made a difference by fully leaning into who she is.
