I feel like someone ought to say what everyone is thinking, but "responsible voices" are unwilling to say out loud: using the shutdown as a way to complete Mr Trump's complete takeover of every part of the federal government and ensure loyalty from every federal employee who remains employed would be a massive jump in his program to create an authoritarian government of the United States. In this respect it behooves us to pay special attention to what happens at the Pentagon on September 30th, when in yet another unprecedented move, Pete Hegseth has told all generals and admirals above one star rank around the world to personally attend a meeting at the Pentagon, in peacetime, supposedly for a "pep talk". In the aftermath of the removal of a number of senior military figures, it is reasonable to think that this might be a forum for a purge of officers who are not loyal personally to Mr Trump.
From my vantage point in Alexandria, Virginia I see the administration using this as an opportunity to shift more people out and/or force more “loyalty.” Many long-time government workers say they serve the country not a political party. That may not be an acceptable position anymore.
